Imagine...
This may seem a non event to many I know but we listen to music everyday;
often taking it for granted.
Some songs stir a memory when I hear them and I often wonder what would have happened if the person who wrote and performed that song was still with us.
What marvellous, amazing, music would
that person, that performer, have given us if they were not taken prematurely.
One always comes to mind...no two...firstly John Lennon who died at the
early age of 40 and strangely as I write this it has been 40 years since his
death. I had no idea until I just checked.
Shot by a “so called” fan, who himself it seems wanted fame, but only
achieved disgrace and notoriety. Such a waste...such a great waste of life and talent. With
Paul McCartney they wrote together around 200 memorable songs and as The Beatles
they sold hundreds of millions of records
Whenever I hear the very haunting song ‘Imagine’..or ‘Woman’ dedicated to
his wife Yoko Ono and his caring, thoughtful, song for his son Sean ‘Beautiful Boy’,
which seems to be heard often on the radio, I wonder what could have
been.
He outlived the Beatles but never outlived his fame and he will go on
forever in the annals of music history.
The other great I admire, and of course there are many, too many to name, but as I say just the ones that always come to mind when their music is
played...the other is Frederick Bulsara better known as Freddie Mercury the
legendary front man of of the rock group Queen who also died in his forties at
age 45 in 1991.
He was a genius way ahead of his time and I wonder what he would have
composed if he were alive now. His songs we still hear played on the radio;
still played to this day.
Bohemian Rhapsody is a masterpiece.
He made so many memorable hits with Queen including ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Love
of My Life’, ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’, ‘Somebody to love’...the list
goes on... and in 1987 he realised a long term dream to record with revered
opera diva Montserrat Caballe. The LP’s title song ‘Barcelona’ went on to be an
anthem for the city of Barcelona for the Olympics of 1992.
He went on to explore a wide spectrum of interests in the arts including
ballet, theatre and of course opera.
Just some thoughts on two of the many music artists we lost far too
soon...both from preventable deaths..one killed by a fan who wanted notoriety
the other by a dreadful disease that took far too many talented people in its
wake.
As in the song by Kansas...’All We Are Is Dust In The Wind’ no matter who
we are..but their memories and music will live on forever.
