I got to thinking the other day while sitting having a coffee before doing the weekly shop....
I was studying two guys, I’m not sure of the country of origin, maybe Indonesian, sitting talking using sign language. They were deeply engrossed in each others conversation. It just looked interesting and made me wonder is sign language, the actual signs used, universal or does it change from country to country? Is there an accent ...a twist? I guess there must be.
I’m always fascinated watching them on the news standing beside a politician or when some important news event is happening. The facial expressions are so distinctive...so very expressive. They seem to feel the words as well as sign them. It just intrigues me and wonder how difficult it must be to learn.
I try to follow them rather than the person talking and though they may be a sentence or two behind the talker they do an amazing job. I suppose they make an interpretation of what’s said at times to catch up as it were, if they get too far behind what’s actually being said, rather than signing exactly word for word.
With hearing implants, the Cochlear for example, hearing loss has come a very long way but there are many who prefer to still sign.
Interesting and I wouldn’t mind trying to learn but the speed they travel at makes it look almost impossible. I know a few and only a few signs from watching them.
We are so fortunate indeed to be able to hear and also see our way in this world where many are not able to do so. We take so much for granted..maybe too much. It’s when something happens and that “power”, whatever it is, is taken from us that we miss it otherwise it’s always there..never failing us..taken so much for granted.
Life is taken for granted. We never know what’s around the corner. I think this time of the pandemic, the modern day plague that is amongst us, has made many think and not take life for granted so much as we have done in the past.’' Many peoples attitude has changed and will continue to do so I feel.
Nothing is guaranteed...nothing!
